Questions

A. Scott / Xeirxes said...

"So I had a talk with a friend the other day about the motorcycle helmet laws in some states. My argument was basically, "It doesn't hurt anyone, so why should we enforce it?" His argument was, "It doesn't hurt anyone, but they say it costs taxpayers $100,000 every time someone gets in a motorcycle accident. It's better for the good of the group if we enforce a helmet law."

What is your stand on this?"

well my first question is how do we spend 100,000 dollars every time a motorcyclist dies in a crash? Did the great state of Nevada take like a 100,000 dollar bet with his old drinking Buddie that NO ONE would ever die in a motorcycle accident in Nevada?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't cost 100,000 dollars to scrape a dead guy off of asphalt. although I am not one to know such things.

anywho, if we (the taxpayers) had to pay 100,000 dollars every time I masturbated, although that would be ALOT of money it would be an invasion of my privacy and libertyto stop me. so yeah that's kinda a hard one (no I'm not talking about myself)

maybe we should take away the right/privledge to drive, then no one could get in an accsident and we would save the government alot of money.

I don't really have to much of an opinion on this but it seems that people should have the choice to think for themselves UNTILL it hurts other people...

so does not wearing a motorcycle helmet hurt other people???  It's debateible

sorry I couldin't fully awnser your question...

at least it was an interesting discussion. i think that maybe the real problem here is that some of the libertarian ideals don't mix and match with other ideals. for instance, if you're going to have a health care system, you should have motorcycle helmets, because we pay for health care and it's expensive for someone to die. if you take away the health care system, then who cares if you wear a helmet or not?

but on the flip side, would you rather have a bigger serving of rights, or a bigger serving of protection?

yeah for sure...

but libitarians aren't down with government paid health care in anyway shape or form...

so that still leaves the whole idea to yourself...

you know?

if you want to not wear a helmet ALMOST die and pay hospital bills for the rest of your life...

have fun...

I think thats kinda true with most political philosophys though...

all or nothing or it won't work...

cause i'm sure the gold standard plays into motorcycle crashes somehow...
